Our Story

Where Compassion, Culture, and Care Come Together

Who We Are

Universal Metro Asian Services (UMAS) is a community-based nonprofit organization with decades of experience serving seniors, families, and underserved populations across Chicagoland.

We are committed to creating a respectful, inclusive, and supportive workplace where caregivers and staff are valued as essential partners in our mission.

Our Story

When Mrs. Santosh Kumar emigrated to the United States in 1985, she was amazed by all the opportunities the country offered. However, she was also shocked to see how many older adults were being neglected.

Immigrant families were going through difficult times trying to care for their aging loved ones. They worked full-time jobs, raised their children, and adjusted to American culture, all while lacking culturally sensitive home care services for their elders.

Mrs. Kumar knew she could not allow South Asian seniors in her community to suffer this way, so she set out to make a difference.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide high-quality, culturally responsive services with dignity and compassion, while fostering a supportive, values-driven workplace for caregivers and staff.

Our Values in Action

THE PRINCIPLES THAT GUIDE HOW WE SERVE AND SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY

At UMAS, our work is guided by shared values that shape how we care for individuals, families, and each other, every day.

Respect: We honor individual differences and foster a safe, inclusive environment where clients and staff are treated with fairness and mutual respect.

Compassion: We approach our work with empathy and understanding, responding to others' needs with care, patience, and humanity.

Dignity: We protect privacy, uphold personal choice, and ensure every individual is treated with dignity in every interaction.

Advocacy: We amplify voices, remove barriers, and help individuals access the services, information, and support they need to thrive.

Together, these values guide our commitment to culturally responsive, community-centered care.

Home Care Services

As we age, maintaining independence and living safely in our own homes can become challenging. Daily tasks may feel overwhelming, but you donโ€™t have to face them alone. Our Home Care Program helps seniors remain comfortable and independent by providing assistance with everyday activities in the privacy of their homes.

Adult Day Services Center

Aging should never mean feeling isolated or slowing down. Your golden years can be active, joyful, and fulfilling! Our Adult Day Service Centers offer a welcoming space where older adults enjoy structured activities, social interaction, and meaningful engagement, all in a safe, lively environment.

Become a Caregiver

It takes a special person to become an exceptional caregiver. Compassion, respect, patience, and genuine care for older adults are the heart of our caregiving community. At UMAS, caregivers provide dignified, culturally sensitive support to seniors in need.
